DTF Printing vs. Screen Printing: What It Is and Why It's Changing Garment Decoration?

If you've ordered custom apparel recently, there's a good chance it was printed using DTF — Direct-to-Film — even if nobody told you.
It's one of the fastest-growing methods in garment decoration, and here at Protonix, we've watched that shift happen order by order on our own production floor. It solves several problems screen printing has lived with for decades.
What Is DTF Printing?
DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. Instead of printing onto the garment, the design is printed onto a PET film using pigment inks, including a white ink base that keeps colour opaque on dark fabrics.
While the ink is still wet, a fine TPU hot-melt adhesive powder is dusted over it, excess is shaken off, and the film is cured so the powder melts into a smooth adhesive layer.
That film-plus-powder is the transfer. It can be stored or used immediately: press it onto the garment with heat and pressure for a few seconds, peel the film away, and the design is permanently bonded to the fabric.
Because DTF is built like a digital inkjet print — CMYK plus white, laid down by a printhead — it handles gradients, photographic detail, and unlimited colours in a single pass.

Screen printing is a stencil-and-mesh process built for repetition — it gets cheaper the more you print of the same design.
DTF is a digital process built for flexibility — cost per unit stays roughly flat whether you print one piece or a hundred.

A single custom piece is as viable as a bulk order.
Full-Colour, Photographic Printing
Gradients and fine detail can be reproduced in a single run.
Works Across Fabric Types
Not limited to cotton the way screen printing often is.
Fast Turnaround
No screens or colour registration are required to set up.
Good Wash Durability
A properly cured TPU layer holds colour and resists cracking.
Transfers Can Be Pre-Made and Stored
Print transfers ahead of time and apply them later when required.
Cons of DTF
Higher Per-Unit Cost at High Volume
Screen printing can win once a screen's setup cost is spread across hundreds of pieces.
Equipment and Consumables Add Up
Printer, powder, film, and ink are ongoing costs that need to be factored into unit economics.
The Print Still Sits as a Layer on the Fabric
Similar to plastisol, it is not as invisible to the touch as a water-based or discharge print.
Process-Sensitive
Cure temperature, powder coverage, press time, and peel timing all need to be right, or you risk cracking or poor adhesion.
Large Solid-Colour Blocks Can Feel More "Printed"
Large solid-colour areas can read as slightly more "printed" than mesh-pushed ink.

Many shops now run both, choosing per order rather than committing to one process for everything — which is really what's driving DTF's growth.
It's not replacing screen printing; it's covering what screen printing was never good at.
